Project Ram Phase 5 |
FilterMag Project. |
This is what it is. It comes nicely boxed in bubble wrap. There are two
models of Filtermags for sale. I bought the best and of course most expensive.
I figured the best one had more magnets. More magnets means
more crap I can filter out of my oil. |
, |
Here it is installed. I had a few people ask me if I think it would fall off?
Well when I went to snap it on for the first time it grabbed so hard and
so fast that my finger got stuck under it. I was not expecting it to pull
so fast. I will not fall off. The only way to get it off right
now is to pry it off with a screw driver or slide it down with alot of force.
Below is the FilterMag lifting a 11 pound weight with only the edges of 3
magnets. There are 12 magnets total in the Filtermag. |
For this section alittle background info is needed. Around June/July I installed
one Filtermag on my Ram and one my Intrepid. I saw an article in Car
Craft and that got me to thinking what a wonderful idea this is. For those
of you who never heard of Filtermags - Take notice. A Filtermag is a
set of rare earth magnets that clamp on the side of your oil filter and pull the
small parts of metal out of the oil towards the wall of the oil filter.
From there they are held to the side of the filter until you do your oil change.
For those of you who have done a transmission fluid change you will
know what I mean. After you pull of the trans-pan off you look at the
small magnet inside the pan at the bottom. You will notice it looks about
the size of a quarter. When you touch it you notice that half the
size of the magnet is made up of small metal particles. This metal has worn
off the inside of the transmission during normal use and now is attached to
your magnet. Well guess what? Your engine wears out too. Why
is there no magnet in your engine crank case? Hmmm I bet you can figure out the
answer. |
This is a top and bottom shot. |
Ok.. Now here it is Nov 5th 2005 and I have put slightly over 5000 miles on
the truck. Lets see if it works.... |
If you have Dsl or Cable you can view the 9 min movie of me cutting open the filter
and viewing the inside of it. This is a must see.... Click Here -----> View video at 200% 121meg Mpeg |
Here are the Hi-res pictures of the inside of the filter after I cut it open.
You can see the metal pulled to the sidewall of the filter. When you take
your figure and smear it. The pockets of metal are quite deep. The small
orange flakes are some paint chips that blew into the oil. It's not easy
to open a oil filter without getting some crap in there! |
You can see here the metal grit stuck to the sidewall and if you look close you can
see the magnetic lines of force in the grit pattern. Very cool.
I really don't need to say anything more. The pictures tell all. |
In this picture I smeared the metal to the left in order for you to see how much
metal it really caught. I was very pleased with the FilterMag... Money well
spent. |
